Summary: A global news service run by students (in partnership with the Daniel Pearl Foundation).
Description: In partnership with the Daniel Pearl Foundation, this initiative has launched a unique international news service called PEARL World Youth News. Adhering to the highest journalistic standards, secondary school students from around the world select the issues to be reported, and write, edit and publish their articles on the web-based news service. Any school can reprint articles from PEARL World Youth News to add a global component to their local publications. Any high school student can join the news service as a PEARL reporter after successfully completing an online training and certification course. With an emphasis on unbiased reporting and respect for a diversity of views, PEARL World Youth News hopes to not only develop journalistic skills among students but also broaden cross-cultural understanding and provide an important global youth perspective.
- Facilitator(s): Anindita_Dutta_Roy
- Country: United States
- Languages: English
- Student Age Level: 15-18
- Contributions: This project aims to take students beyond becoming media literate into becoming international correspondents for student publications. Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan, used journalism and music to connect people of diverse backgrounds. His skills as a foreign correspondent and his commitment to promoting understanding have inspired this initiative.
- Outcomes: School newspapers will be able to publish articles from the “PEARL World Youth News” service to add an international component to their papers. The articles will also be provided to mainstream publications on a subscription basis. Co-sponsored by the Daniel Pearl Foundation, this project builds on iEARN’s existing Media Mosaic, Planetary Notions, and other news magazine projects by taking students beyond becoming media literate into becoming young journalists.
